UFC 231 took place in Toronto, Canada this past weekend. Max Holloway defended his featherweight title as the doctors stopped his fight with Brian Ortega in between the forth and fifth round. Ortega had suffered a broken nose and continued to go to war with Holloway for 4 rounds.
Max Holloway (Featherweight Champion)
After defending his title for the second time, Holloway has a lot of options in his future. There are a lot of talks of him fighting at lightweight so that he would not have to cut as much weight. If he did decide to go to lightweight, he has a fight with the lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. He also would have the option to rematch Conor McGregor, who gave him his last loss. Any other fight in the top 5 such as Tony Ferguson or or Dustin Porier are also very interesting fights. Could Holloway possibly feel like he still has more to accomplish at featherweight? Renato Moicano would look to be the obvious number one contender who has not fought the champion. The number two in line to get the fight would be Frankie Edger. Both fights that may be interesting for Holloway to cement his legacy at featherweight.
Next fight: Max Holloway-Renato Moicano
Ortega showed a lot of heart in his title fight with Max Holloway this past weekend. He never quit even after getting punched in the nose with a broken nose hundreds of times. He will still be at the top of the featherweight division after this last fight. Therefore someone like Jose Aldo who always is a top contender at featherweight would look like the best possible fight to make for the fans. It may also be interesting to see a interim title fight between Ortega and Renato Moicano if Holloway did decide to move up to lightweight.
Next fight: Brian Ortega-Jose Aldo
Before defeating Alex Oliveria this past weekend, Nelson’s last fight prior to that was a little over a year prior when he got knocked out by Santiago Ponzinibbio. In Ponzinibbio’s last fight he defeated one Neil Magny. Magny is a very skilled ground fighter with pretty good stand-up. Nelson being a great submission fighter is a great stylistic match-up for Magny.
Next fight: Gunner Nelson-Neil Magny
Santos delivered a devestating knock out to Jimi Manuwa at UFC 231. Sealing himself as a knockout artist at 205, Santos should be moving up quickly in the ranks. Santos was rising threw the middleweight rankings before he moved to light heavyweight and won two straight. He deserves to fight a contender next at the top of the chain. Anthony Smith is another fighter who rose from middleweight to make a name for himself at 205. Although he is calling for a title fight it is clear that he is second or third in line for a title fight and would need to take at least one more fight before fighting for a title. Another side note would be that Santos and Smith actually fought already at middleweight. Where Santos won via TKO. Seeing both of these guys rising threw the ranks, and Smith being ranked higher then Santos, the UFC would be extremely smart to set up a rematch between the two.
Next fight: Thiago Santos-Anthony Smith
